A dog walker shot and killed a man after an alleged confrontation in Garden Grove Thursday.

The shooting happened at about 2:50 p.m. when the dog walker was in the 10400 block of Katella Avenue. According to the Garden Grove Police Department, a confrontation with another man prompted the shooting.

Witness Sebastian Bona said he heard three shots ring out before running outside and finding a man bleeding out on the sidewalk. He added that he didn't see a gun but the shooter, who was in his late 60s, gave him an explanation.

"'He tried to attack me so I shot him.' Those were his exact words," said Bona. "That's what he exactly said to me when I asked him."

The dog walker called the police shortly after opening fire. Paramedics rushed the victim to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police said the shooter has been cooperating with detectives. He had a valid concealed weapons permit and turned over his firearms to officers.

"Obviously, you can't just shoot random people," said Sgt. Nick Jensen. "Everyone likes to say there's two sides to a story. Well, unfortunately in this, we only have one side."

Jensen that investigators are determining what led to the fatal shooting before sending the case to the Orange County District Attorney.

No weapon has been found on the victim, according to police. Police have not identified him but described him as a man in his mid 30s.

Bona said he saw him earlier in the morning sleeping on the sidewalk.
