Dr. Gopal Marathe is an accomplished musician living in Southern California. Originally from a small town called Muddebihal in Karnatak, he has been in United States since 1972. Back home he was an All India Radio artist in Bangalore and Dharwar stations in Sugam Sangeet. He is a multifaceted artist being a composer, singer, harmonium player and music teacher. As a composer he has composed music for many Bhajans, Gazals, dance dramas both in Kathak and Bharat Natyam styles and many full-length stage musicals. Among his major achievements is a cassette of Bhajans called “Swaranjali” he composed for Anuradha Paudwal. He was awarded a Platinum Disc for that work. He also performed along with Anuradha Paudwal on a National TV program “Arohi” that program was based on “Swaranajali”. As a singer he has given light music and gazal concerts all over United States as well as in India. He traveled all over Canada and US as singer accompanist with the legendary kathak dancer Sitara Devi and the Tabla wizard Zakir Hussain on her last tour of the US few years ago. As harmonium player he has accompanied many world class Hindustani classical singers such as Pandit Jasraj, Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Laxmi Shankar, Prabha Atre, Jitendra Abhisheki to name a few. He is an excellent music teacher. He has been teaching Hindustani music in Southern California since 1980. Presently he is also teaching a North Indian Music course in Cal Poly Pomona. He has a Ph.D. in Microbiology and worked for the prestigious City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte for over 20 years. Currently teaches Microbiology in Riverside community College in Riverside, California.
